Tinubu Seeks N’Assembly Approval for N100.5bn Yobe Cargo Airport Reimbursement
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the National Assembly to approve a N100.5 billion promissory note programme to reimburse the Yobe State Government for constructing the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport in Damaturu.
The request was conveyed in separate letters addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
In the letters, the President sought legislative approval for the establishment and issuance of the promissory note programme through the Debt Management Office (DMO).
The proposed arrangement is intended to facilitate reimbursement to the Yobe State Government for the cost of constructing the airport, a major aviation infrastructure project in the state.
If approved by the National Assembly, the programme would provide the framework for the Federal Government to settle the eligible expenditure incurred by the state government on the project.
The request places the airport project before lawmakers for consideration as part of the Federal Government’s financial obligations requiring legislative authorisation.
The Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport is located in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital. Its development is expected to support air cargo operations, improve connectivity and create opportunities for trade and economic activities in the North-East.
However, the proposed N100.5 billion reimbursement remains subject to the National Assembly’s consideration and approval.
Further details on the terms of the promissory note programme, the verification of the state government's expenditure and the proposed repayment arrangements were not contained in the information available at the time of filing this report.
