TINUBU: NIGERIA HAS MOVED FROM REFORM TO PROSPERITY

President defends economic policies, promises lower cost of living, jobs and stronger social protection

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria has moved beyond what he described as the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms, saying the government’s focus is now shifting towards broad-based prosperity.

In his Independence Day address to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, President Tinubu acknowledged that the reforms had imposed difficulties on households but argued that they were necessary to address what he described as longstanding structural distortions in the economy.

He said the administration would now concentrate on reducing the cost of living, expanding agricultural production, supporting industries, creating jobs and improving access to essential public services.

Tinubu said the government would also strengthen social intervention programmes for vulnerable Nigerians, expand access to education financing and improve primary healthcare and basic education.

The President said the economy had grown by more than four per cent in 2026, while claiming that inflation had fallen from its peak, foreign reserves had improved and the foreign-exchange market had stabilised.

He described the next phase as an “age of prosperity”, while acknowledging that millions of Nigerians continue to face difficulties with food, transportation, education, healthcare and household expenses.
