NIGERIA @66: TINUBU DECLARES ‘REFORM ERA’ OVER, PROMISES PROSPERITY AS HARDSHIP REMAINS KEY TEST

NATIONAL | ECONOMY
ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria has moved beyond the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms, promising a new era focused on prosperity, jobs, industrial growth and lower living costs.

Addressing Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, the President defended the difficult economic decisions taken since 2023, arguing that they were necessary to correct longstanding structural weaknesses.

Tinubu said the economy has grown by more than four per cent in 2026, while inflation has declined from its peak, foreign-exchange conditions have stabilised and oil theft has reduced.
But the President also acknowledged that millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with food, school fees, medical bills and transportation costs.

He said the next phase would prioritise reducing the cost of producing and transporting goods, agricultural productivity, industrialisation, digital connectivity, jobs and support for vulnerable households.

The central question confronting the administration now is whether its reported macroeconomic gains will translate into cheaper food, stronger purchasing power, more jobs and tangible relief for households.

NINE MINERS KILLED AS BAUCHI MINING PIT FLOODS

BAUCHI — Nine miners have died after a mining pit at the Zurfi Mining Company in Nahuta Village, Gwana District of Alkaleri Local Government Area, Bauchi State, was flooded.

The incident occurred as the miners were working at the site, with the deaths confirmed on Thursday.
The tragedy has again raised concerns over safety conditions in Nigeria's mining sector, particularly the risks faced by workers operating in vulnerable mining environments.
Authorities are expected to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether required safety measures were in place.

The deaths raise serious questions about enforcement of mining-safety regulations and the responsibility of operators to protect workers in hazardous extraction sites.

MAIDUGURI ARRESTS: POLICE DEFEND ‘TINUBU MUST GO’ CASE

MAIDUGURI — The Borno State Police Command has defended its arrest and prosecution of five men found wearing T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” in Maiduguri.
The command said the men were arrested during a routine patrol around West End Roundabout and alleged that officers found them with substances suspected to be cannabis, tablets, a shisha pot and other items.

The suspects were subsequently charged over allegations including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery.

The case has generated public debate because of the political message displayed on the shirts, while the police maintain that the arrests were connected to alleged offences beyond the clothing itself.

The development has placed renewed attention on the balance between public-order enforcement and citizens' freedom to express political opinions.

MILITARY PAY RISE: NEW SALARIES BEGIN REFLECTING IN TROOPS’ ACCOUNTS

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that Nigerian military personnel have begun receiving September salaries reflecting the recently approved salary increase.
The new pay structure is expected to improve the welfare and conditions of service of Armed Forces personnel.
The development comes as the military continues to confront insurgency, terrorism, banditry and other security threats across different parts of the country.
For troops deployed in high-risk operational environments, improved welfare remains an important component of maintaining morale and supporting sustained security operations.

66 YEARS AFTER INDEPENDENCE: THE PROMISE MUST NOW MEET THE PEOPLE

Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary arrives at a defining moment.
The Federal Government says its difficult reforms have corrected the country's economic direction and created the foundation for prosperity. Opposition and civil-society voices continue to point to the hardship confronting millions of households.

Both the statistics and the lived experience matter.
Economic growth means little to a family that cannot afford food. Currency stability must ultimately be reflected in purchasing power. Increased government revenue must translate into better infrastructure, healthcare, education and security.

The next chapter of Nigeria's story therefore cannot be judged solely by government announcements or political criticism.
It must be judged by results that ordinary Nigerians can see, afford and feel.
At 66, Nigeria does not merely need another promise of a better tomorrow.
Nigeria needs the better tomorrow to become measurable today.
