Amaechi: I’ll Abandon Atiku Ticket, Campaign for Tinubu If Petrol Falls to ₦600

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has said he would withdraw from the party’s presidential ticket and campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 if the pump price of petrol falls to ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the declaration while responding to President Tinubu’s Independence Day address during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The former Rivers State governor questioned the President’s assertion that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity”, arguing that the claim should be assessed against the everyday economic realities confronting Nigerians.

Amaechi specifically cited transportation costs and the price of petrol as measures by which Nigerians could determine whether the economy was improving.

“It is about believability; who do you believe?” Amaechi said, questioning whether the prices of essential goods and services had actually declined.

He then turned the discussion to petrol prices, saying he was prepared to personally visit a filling station to establish whether the product was selling at ₦600 per litre.

«“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel, I will go myself. If fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu.”»

Amaechi subsequently escalated the challenge, inviting those who doubted his declaration to accompany him with a camera.

«“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel,” he said.»

He added that he would withdraw as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate and campaign for Tinubu if the petrol price reached the stated threshold.

«“I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as a vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down.”»

Amaechi’s comments come as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He is currently associated with the ADC ticket alongside former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

The statement also places the cost of petrol and broader economic conditions at the centre of Amaechi’s criticism of the Tinubu administration, while linking a specific petrol-price benchmark to his stated political position.

The declaration, however, remains a political statement by Amaechi and does not itself constitute any formal withdrawal from the ADC ticket.
