Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has taken a significant legal and institutional step to address allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other violent criminal activities.
Through his legal representatives, the senator has voluntarily submitted himself to the Department of State Services (DSS), requesting a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the allegations being circulated against him across print and social media platforms.
In a formal letter dated September 11, 2026, and addressed to the Director-General of the DSS, Senator Shehu Buba's lawyers said their client had expressly instructed them to make the representation and present him to the Service as a responsible citizen willing to cooperate with any investigation concerning matters capable of undermining Nigeria's national security.
The letter was received and acknowledged by the DSS on the same date.
The senator's legal team described the allegations against him as serious, maintaining that their sustained circulation had caused considerable damage to his reputation and raised concerns about the potential consequences for his political and public career.
Senator Shehu Buba currently chairs the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry. He previously served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence during the 10th National Assembly.
According to his lawyers, the allegations have included claims associating the senator with banditry, terrorism financing, membership of terrorist or criminal organisations, kidnapping and other forms of violent criminal activity.
The legal representatives said their client was particularly concerned because of his previous role overseeing national security matters in the Senate and his engagements with Nigeria's military and security agencies.
They argued that records of his activities and contributions to efforts aimed at tackling banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes should be available to the relevant security authorities.
Senator Demands Independent Verification
Rather than relying solely on public denials, Senator Shehu Buba has asked the DSS to subject the allegations to institutional scrutiny and establish the facts.
His lawyers stated that, despite what they described as the “avalanche” of accusations circulating on social media, none of the alleged accusers had approached any security agency with a formal complaint against their client.
The legal team also disclosed that Senator Shehu Buba had, in September 2025, petitioned the Nigeria Police Force through counsel over what they described as malicious and defamatory allegations.
The latest move therefore places the controversy directly before the country's intelligence authorities, giving the DSS an opportunity to independently examine the allegations and determine whether there is any credible evidence supporting them.
Political Dimension
The development comes as Senator Shehu Buba has expressed interest in contesting the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election on the platform of the People's Redemption Party (PRP).
His lawyers alleged that the campaign of accusations against him may be connected to his political ambition, claiming that some social media influencers had been mobilised to damage his reputation and political prospects.
However, the senator's decision to voluntarily submit himself to the DSS represents a move to shift the matter from the arena of social media allegations to the formal investigative process of a national security institution.
For now, the allegations remain allegations. No finding of guilt should be inferred from their publication, just as the senator's voluntary submission should not, by itself, be construed as a finding of innocence. The facts ultimately established by the appropriate authorities will determine the substance of the claims.
