NIGER: FG CONSTITUTES PANEL OVER DEATHS OF 37 PEOPLE IN NSCDC CUSTODY
The Federal Government has constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths of 37 people detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
The Ministry of Interior said the committee was constituted on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and has been given two weeks to submit its report.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo also ordered the suspension of 20 NSCDC officers involved in the incident, in addition to the Niger State Commandant.
The committee is mandated to establish the identities of the deceased, investigate their arrest and detention, determine the cause and circumstances of the deaths, and identify any responsibility, negligence or misconduct.
NIGER: POLICE ALSO INVESTIGATE DEATHS OF SUSPECTED ILLEGAL MINERS
The Niger State Police Command opened an investigation after 37 suspected illegal miners died while in NSCDC custody in Minna.
According to Premium Times, Commissioner of Police Adamu Elleman directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The NSCDC had attributed the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak but said the actual cause had not been conclusively established and that medical examinations would be conducted.
BAUCHI: APC WINS DISINA STATE CONSTITUENCY BY-ELECTION
The APC candidate, Yakubu Ali, won the Disina State Constituency bye-election in Bauchi State with 5,846 votes.
The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate scored 5,225 votes, while the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) candidate received 3,701 votes, according to results reported from the election.
The same bye-election exercise produced a different outcome in the neighbouring Sakwa State Constituency, where APM candidate Adamu Yakubu was declared winner with 8,515 votes.
KANO: APC CANDIDATE WINS DAWAKIN KUDU BY-ELECTION
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Hussain Yusuf-Datti of the APC winner of the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency bye-election.
Returning Officer Ibrahim Tajo-Suraj said Yusuf-Datti polled 22,890 votes. PRP candidate Habib Hamisu scored 270 votes, while PDP candidate Abdullahi Adamu received 108 votes.
GOMBE: APC WINS GOMBE/KWAMI/FUNAKAYE FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY
APC candidate Kallamu MaiJama’a won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency bye-election with 41,121 votes, according to results reported from the election.
The Labour Party candidate scored 3,553 votes, while the APM candidate received 872 votes.
DELTA: APC WINS UDU STATE CONSTITUENCY
In Delta State, APC candidate Okolosi Ator won the Udu State Constituency bye-election with 8,724 votes.
The PDP candidate polled 214 votes, according to the reported result.
INEC: BYE-ELECTIONS PROVIDE OPERATIONAL LESSONS FOR 2027
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan described Saturday's bye-elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta as important operational exercises for the commission.
According to INEC, the elections covered the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi, and Udu State Constituency in Delta.
The commission said the exercises would provide lessons for preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned of high riverine flood risk in 15 states between September 19 and 25.
