FG Pays 8-Month Academic Tools Allowance to Federal Tertiary Institution Lecturers

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of eight months’ arrears of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to academic staff of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The allowance covers the period from January to August 2026, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed on Wednesday.
Alausa made the disclosure shortly after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation, where he also spoke on ongoing efforts to strengthen quality assurance and academic standards across tertiary institutions.
The payment is expected to provide financial relief to lecturers and other academic staff who have been awaiting the allowance, while supporting their professional and academic responsibilities.
The CATA is intended to assist academic staff with expenses associated with their teaching, research and other professional activities.
The minister said the payment reflects the Federal Government’s continued commitment to addressing welfare concerns within the tertiary education sector while implementing broader reforms aimed at improving the quality and standard of education.
The announcement also comes against the backdrop of renewed efforts by the government to strengthen accreditation and quality assurance mechanisms in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
With the payment covering the first eight months of 2026, academic staff across federal tertiary institutions are expected to benefit from the government’s latest intervention as discussions continue on further improvements to the education sector.
