The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Goshe Yilwatda, has commenced a two-week vacation outside Nigeria to rest, reflect and re-strategise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, the vacation follows what was described as an exceptionally demanding and eventful first year of Yilwatda’s tenure as leader of the ruling party.
The statement said the period would provide the APC National Chairman with an opportunity for personal rejuvenation after months of intensive engagements, consultations, travels and strategic activities aimed at repositioning and strengthening the party.
Since assuming office, Yilwatda has focused on building a stronger and more cohesive APC while working with the National Working Committee (NWC), state party structures, governors, members of the National Assembly, elected officials, stakeholders and party members across the country.
The statement highlighted the successful organisation and conclusion of the APC National Convention, the strengthening of the party’s internal structures and the conduct of primary elections at various levels as some of the major activities undertaken under his leadership in preparation for the 2027 elections.
It added that the achievements had further consolidated the APC’s position as Nigeria’s governing political party and one of Africa’s major political organisations.
Contrary to any suggestion that the vacation represents a disengagement from party affairs, the APC said the break would enable Yilwatda to step back briefly from his demanding day-to-day responsibilities, recharge and reflect on the challenges ahead.
The National Chairman is also expected to use the period to sharpen his strategic thinking ahead of the 2027 elections, which the party described as a defining moment for the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
According to the statement, Yilwatda will equally reflect on the next phase of the party’s development and put finishing touches to the planning of an upcoming NWC retreat.
The retreat is expected to provide an important platform for the NWC to review the party’s performance, identify emerging challenges and agree on strategies for the months ahead, while strengthening coordination within the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 electoral season.
The APC said the National Chairman’s temporary absence from the country would not affect the operations of the party, as the NWC would continue to discharge its responsibilities in accordance with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
Yilwatda is expected to return to Nigeria at the end of the two-week vacation and resume his engagements with renewed energy and focus.
The party described the decision as timely and necessary, noting that leadership of a national political organisation requires not only continuous engagement but also periods of reflection, strategic assessment and renewal.
