Nigeria Records Major Gains in Health Sector as Government Pushes Universal Health Coverage
Nigeria's health sector has recorded measurable progress under the Federal Government's ongoing health-sector reforms, particularly in primary healthcare, maternal and newborn health, immunisation and health insurance.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, maternal deaths declined by 17 per cent, while newborn deaths fell by 12 per cent across 172 high-burden local government areas targeted under the government's intervention model.
The ministry also reported that 435 primary healthcare facilities have been revitalised, while more than 15,000 community-based health workers have been recruited in priority states and nearly 70,000 frontline health workers retrained.
Primary Healthcare Utilisation Surges
Utilisation of facilities supported through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund increased substantially, rising from about 10 million visits in early 2024 to approximately 45 million by mid-2025, according to government data.
The Federal Government says the increase reflects improved access and growing public confidence in primary healthcare services.
More Women Access Emergency Maternal Care
The inclusion of emergency obstetric services under national health insurance has also produced measurable results.
The government reported that more than 4,000 free caesarean sections had been performed in NHIA-empanelled facilities, while skilled birth attendance increased by 33 per cent.
Immunisation Campaign Reaches Millions of Nigerian Children
Nigeria has also recorded significant progress in vaccination.
During the nationwide measles-rubella vaccination campaign, approximately 103 million children aged nine months to 14 years were vaccinated during the first two phases, according to the World Health Organization.
The Federal Government has also reported that more than 14 million girls aged 9–14 have been reached with HPV vaccination, while the measles-rubella campaign reached more than 102 million children, representing approximately 99 per cent coverage according to government figures.
Nigeria Intensifies Cancer Control Efforts
The Federal Government is strengthening cancer prevention, early detection and treatment through expanded partnerships and investment.
In August, the Ministry of Health inaugurated a blood-cancer consortium and announced measures aimed at improving cancer diagnosis and treatment capacity.
Nigeria is also strengthening cooperation with China to expand oncology services, technology transfer and radiotherapy capacity.
Malaria Remains a Major Focus
The Federal Ministry of Health has reported a decline in malaria prevalence to 15 per cent and announced plans to scale up perennial malaria chemoprevention as part of efforts to accelerate malaria elimination.
Mental Health Policy Takes New Direction
In another significant health-policy development announced today, the Federal Government approved a proposed amendment to the National Mental Health Act aimed at removing criminal penalties for attempted suicide.
