Jonathan Commissions 18 Bauchi Township Roads as Bala Mohammed Targets 5,000km Statewide

Former President praises infrastructure drive as Governor says projects are designed to expand connectivity, commerce and economic opportunities

Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, has commissioned 18 newly completed township road projects executed by the Bauchi State Government across the Bauchi metropolis.

The projects, which span a combined 49.7 kilometres, were delivered at an estimated cost of ₦13.7 billion, marking another major intervention in the state government's ongoing road infrastructure programme.

Governor Bala Mohammed, who spoke during the commissioning ceremony, said the projects were part of his administration's broader commitment to developing modern infrastructure capable of improving mobility, stimulating economic activities and enhancing the quality of life of residents.

The Governor expressed appreciation to former President Jonathan for honouring the state with his presence and for his positive assessment of the projects.

According to him, Jonathan described the newly completed roads as evidence of practical, purposeful and impactful governance, stressing the importance of quality road infrastructure in connecting communities, facilitating commerce and creating economic opportunities.

Governor Mohammed said his administration's road development programme was not merely about constructing roads, but about opening up communities and improving access to essential services.

“Our road development programme goes far beyond laying asphalt. It is about opening up communities, connecting our people to schools, hospitals and markets, improving security, expanding economic opportunities and laying a solid foundation for sustainable development,” he said.

The Governor disclosed that since assuming office, his administration had completed approximately 3,000 kilometres of roads across Bauchi State, as it works towards an ambitious target of approximately 5,000 kilometres.

He said the administration remained determined to ensure that every part of the state benefited from infrastructure projects capable of delivering meaningful and lasting development.

He further explained that the newly commissioned township roads were constructed in line with approved engineering standards, incorporating durable pavements, drainage systems, traffic signs, road markings and speed-calming measures.

Some of the selected routes, he added, were also fitted with solar-powered streetlights to improve night-time visibility and contribute to enhanced security.

Governor Mohammed commended the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Professor Titus Uba Ketkukah, officials of the ministry, contractors and other stakeholders who contributed to the successful completion of the projects.

He reiterated his administration's commitment to quality assurance, effective supervision and prudent utilisation of public resources.

The Governor also urged residents to take ownership of the newly constructed roads and protect them against avoidable damage and misuse.

“These roads belong to all of us, and preserving them is a shared responsibility,” he said.

He maintained that the administration would continue to prioritise prudent management of public resources while investing in infrastructure that creates opportunities, strengthens communities and improves citizens' living conditions.

“For us, governance must ultimately be measured by the positive and tangible difference it makes in the lives of the people,” Governor Mohammed said.

The commissioning of the 18 roads adds to the growing list of infrastructure projects undertaken by the Bauchi State Government as part of its efforts to modernise the state's urban centres and strengthen transportation networks.
