Bauchi — Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old suspect for allegedly impersonating a security operative, unlawfully gaining access to a female students' hostel, attempting to rape a student, and engaging in theft at Malikiyya College of Health, Bauchi.
The suspect, identified as Ahmed Saleh, a resident of the Kobi area of Bauchi metropolis, was apprehended following a distress call received from the institution under the Command's Safe Schools Initiative.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Abubakar Mohammed, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly disguised himself in a police camouflage uniform while claiming to be attached to a private security outfit known as Garu Security Service.
Police said the suspect illegally entered the female hostel located in the Old GRA area of Bauchi before his activities raised alarm.
The Divisional Police Officer of 'B' Division reportedly mobilised detectives and patrol teams to the scene, leading to the suspect's arrest. Officers also recovered the camouflage uniform allegedly used in carrying out the impersonation.
Investigators are also examining the suspect's possible connection to a number of theft incidents previously reported within the hostel premises. Police said he remains in custody as investigations continue and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the inquiry.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, warned individuals and private security organisations against impersonating members of the Nigeria Police Force or any other law enforcement agency.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command's commitment to safeguarding educational institutions across the state through the Safe Schools Initiative, assuring students, school authorities and residents that the police would continue to strengthen security measures aimed at protecting lives and property.
The latest arrest underscores the importance of heightened vigilance within school environments and reflects ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb criminal activities targeting educational institutions. Authorities have urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious individuals or movements to the nearest security agency to enhance community safety.
