The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded another major breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking, intercepting a massive consignment of illicit drugs valued at over N10 billion at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, NDLEA operatives recovered 4,777 sachets of Canadian Loud, a highly potent strain of cannabis, with an estimated street value of over N7.1 billion.
The statement disclosed that the seized drugs weighed 2,388.5 kilograms and were cleverly concealed inside three imported vehicles in an apparent attempt to evade security screening.
Babafemi explained that the discovery was made during a joint examination of a shipment at the Apapa Seaport on Monday, involving NDLEA officers and other relevant security agencies operating at the nation's busiest maritime gateway.
The seizure is regarded as one of the agency's significant operational successes in recent months, underscoring the determination of drug traffickers to exploit Nigeria's ports despite intensified surveillance and enforcement measures.
The NDLEA has continued to strengthen intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and border security operations to disrupt transnational drug trafficking networks and prevent dangerous narcotics from reaching communities across the country.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the proliferation of illicit drugs contributes to rising cases of violent crime, cultism, banditry, terrorism, and other social vices, particularly among young people.
The latest interception is expected to further reinforce ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to combat organised crime and protect public health and national security.
The NDLEA is expected to provide additional details on the operation, including the origin of the shipment, the intended recipients, and any arrests connected with the seizure as investigations continue.
