Rufa’i Hanga, Kano’s Only Opposition Senator, Defects to APC With 136,000 Supporters

Senator Rufa’i Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has defected from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hanga, who was the only opposition senator from Kano State, announced his defection on Saturday alongside other political leaders and about 136,000 supporters.
The development marks Hanga’s formal entry into the ruling APC after his membership of the NDC.
The senator joined the APC during a gathering attended by party members, political leaders and supporters who also declared their allegiance to the ruling party.
Hanga represents Kano Central in the Senate, one of the three senatorial districts in Kano State.
His defection brings the number of senators representing Kano State under the APC to three, following the movement of the state’s other senators from the ruling party.
The development is the latest political realignment involving prominent politicians and supporters in Kano State.
Hanga’s move from the NDC to the APC also comes as political parties continue their activities and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
