2027 PRESIDENCY: KWANKWASO DISMISSES ‘SPARE TYRE’ FEARS, SAYS OBI ALLIANCE IS A PARTNERSHIP
Former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed concerns that he could become a mere “spare tyre” if the emerging political alliance between him and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi succeeds in the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso said he was not worried about being reduced to a subordinate role under an Obi-led administration, stressing that the political understanding between the two leaders was built around partnership, responsibility and a shared commitment to providing Nigerians with effective leadership.
The development comes amid growing public interest in the proposed political arrangement involving Obi and Kwankwaso, two of the most prominent opposition figures associated with the 2023 presidential election.
Their alliance has generated significant political attention because of the potential combination of Obi’s nationwide support base, particularly among young Nigerians, and Kwankwaso’s established political structure and grassroots influence in Kano and other parts of northern Nigeria.
‘I Am Not Worried’
Addressing concerns about his prospective role, Kwankwaso indicated that he was not approaching the proposed alliance from the standpoint of seeking a ceremonial position.
Rather, he presented the arrangement as a political partnership in which both leaders would have clearly defined responsibilities in the administration of the country.
His position seeks to counter speculation that the former Kano governor could find himself politically marginalised as vice president should the proposed ticket eventually secure victory at the polls.
The debate over the powers and influence of a vice president is not new in Nigeria. Although the Constitution establishes the vice president as the president's deputy, the practical influence of the office has historically depended significantly on the relationship between the president and vice president.
For Kwankwaso, however, the political understanding behind the alliance is expected to provide a framework for cooperation rather than rivalry.
A Marriage of Political Strengths
The proposed Obi-Kwankwaso alliance represents one of the more consequential realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi's political movement gained substantial momentum during the 2023 election, when he emerged as a major candidate and attracted considerable support from younger voters and sections of the urban electorate.
Kwankwaso, meanwhile, demonstrated the strength of his northern political base during the same election, particularly in Kano State, where his political movement remained highly influential.
The combination of both political constituencies could potentially create a formidable electoral coalition if effectively coordinated.
However, translating political popularity into a winning presidential coalition would require more than an agreement between two prominent politicians. It would also depend on the ability of their supporters to work together, the strength of their structures across the country and their capacity to convince voters beyond their traditional strongholds.
Beyond the ‘Spare Tyre’ Debate
The controversy surrounding the phrase “spare tyre” reflects a broader question about the actual role Kwankwaso would play in an Obi-led administration.
Given his political experience as a former governor, senator and federal minister, Kwankwaso is unlikely to enter the contest as a conventional vice-presidential candidate whose political influence ends at the presidential villa.
His political history and established network make the nature of the proposed power-sharing arrangement particularly significant.
The alliance will therefore be judged not only by the personalities involved but also by the policy direction, governance structure and institutional reforms they promise to deliver to Nigerians.
2027: A Contest of Coalitions
With the 2027 presidential election approaching, Nigeria's political landscape is already witnessing significant realignments as opposition forces seek to build a coalition capable of challenging the governing establishment.
The Obi-Kwankwaso arrangement could become a major factor in that contest if the two political camps succeed in maintaining unity and developing a credible nationwide campaign.
For Kwankwaso, the message appears straightforward: he does not see the proposed alliance as an arrangement in which he would merely occupy the office of vice president.
He sees it as a partnership in which experience, political strength and responsibility would be combined to pursue a common national objective.
Ultimately, however, the credibility of that partnership—and the extent of influence each leader would exercise in government—will be tested by the political realities of the 2027 election and, if victorious, the demands of governing Nigeria.
