ABUJA, Nigeria — A serving military intelligence officer, Colonel Abdussalam A. Ude, has been killed after reportedly resisting an attempted abduction by armed assailants at his residence in the Kurudu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to information from security sources, the incident occurred on Monday evening shortly after the senior officer arrived home. The attackers allegedly opened fire as he alighted from his vehicle and attempted to forcefully abduct him.
Reports indicate that Colonel Ude resisted the attackers despite being heavily outnumbered. During the confrontation, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
The assailants also reportedly shot members of his household, including his wife, driver, and security guard. The injured victims were evacuated to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Security sources described the late officer as a courageous and highly respected intelligence professional who served in several strategic military intelligence and counter-terrorism roles within the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He reportedly participated in operations against insurgent groups in the North-East and undertook international intelligence assignments, including missions in Chad and France.
Colonel Ude was said to have been due for promotion to the rank of Brigadier General next year.
Security agencies have launched an investigation into the attack and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible. Authorities are yet to officially disclose the motive behind the killing.
His death has renewed concerns over the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly following previous attacks involving serving and retired military personnel.
The late officer is expected to be buried in Abuja in accordance with Islamic rites.
